SMMA presents the sustainable design features of the new Providence College Student Union Entrance addition, completed in 2009. The new facility is now a favorite spot for students on campus.

The presentation addresses the integrated design approach reflected in the facility: passive Solar strategies, Indoor Environmental quality , energy efficiency, bio-retention, sustainable site practices and a roof integrated BIPV system.

Providence College’s campus is set in a dense residential section of Providence. The College looked for this facility to revive the campus Slavin common quad and become a major sustainable presence on the campus. The phased expansion and renovation of the 39-year old, 62,455-square-foot Slavin Center consolidates the full range of student life functions and facilities on campus. SMMA has been involved in all of the planning, design, and construction for the multi-phased project.

The addition includes a glass curtain wall atrium, 24-hour restaurant, radio and TV production center, and public meeting space. SMMA will also feature a variety of additional renewable energy projects including PV, Wind Turbines and Bio-mass in various design and construction stages.

Providence College facility team: Providence College Faciities department; SMMA provided for the site design, architecture and structural engineering; mechanical & plumbing engineering by McGuire group; electrical engineering by Sterling Engineering; civil engineering by Caputo & Wick; Ferrar and Associates was the general contractor.
