Approximately fifty percent of the Commonwealth’s municipal solid waste (MSW) is processed through energy from waste facilities. Given the state of the economy, the rising cost of energy and the desire to reduce our dependence on energy from fossil fuels, especially of foreign origin, is it time for the Commonwealth to reconsider its decision to maintain the existing moratorium on new facilities that would recover energy from municipal solid waste.
This program is the last in a three part series that has focused on the issues surrounding the decision of EEA Secretary Ian Bowles to maintain the existing moratorium and look in greater detail at energy from waste options.
Following a review of the new MassDEP Solid Waste Master Plan, this third EBC energy from waste program will explore the impacts of energy from waste on air quality, public health, recycling, renewable energy and climate change.
